MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS

Kiersten Johnson

Director

Kiersten Johnson, known by her students simply as "Mrs. J", has spent her entire 18 year education career as the music teacher at Irving Elementary in Indianola. Kiersten received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Simpson College, and she was first introduced to the Indianola Schools when she completed her student teaching here! In 2011, she. earned her degree as a Master of Arts in Education from Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI.

Kiersten has also worked with Des Moines Metro Opera as a stage performer and has helped select student performers for various shows over the years. Mrs. J is a participant in the Iowa Choral Directors Association (ICDA) and in 2018 she was invited to be the Guest Conductor for the 5th Grade South-Central Iowa Region Honor Choir. She has had several students selected to participate in ICDA sponsored honor choirs and festivals over her career. As an elementary music educator, one of her goals is to always provide students with meaningful instruction while having fun in the music classroom.

When Mrs. J isn't teaching, she enjoys spending time with family and friends.  Kiersten and her husband, Nick, have two children, Brianne and Brenton.  Nick is a Professional Engineer and also enjoys music. He enjoys listening to many varieties of music, singing, and playing guitar.  Brianne is eleven years old and in 5th Grade at Irving. She loves to sing, dance, create artistic masterpieces, and play outside. Brenton is eight years old and also attends Irving as a third grader. He enjoys riding his bike, watching and cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes & Kansas Jayhawks, and playing outside.

Besides being a wife, mom, and a music teacher, Mrs. Johnson also enjoys traveling, reading, cooking & baking, and taking fitness classes at her local gym. Kiersten is beyond excited to offer additional musical and performance opportunities to the youth and families of Indianola.
